That Song's from a Video Game?!

From what I've witnessed in my life, non-gamers tend to think all video game music is about 8-bit, techno sounds. This sterotype, however, is not the case. The following seven songs could be easily heard on local radio stations. Plus, these songs are some of my favorites.

7. “With Vengeance” from Dynasty Warriors 8

Any hard rock fans out there? Well, Dynasty Warriors constantly has great battle songs. I was watching The Gamer play this last year, and I was so pumped to play when this song came on. I thought, “Yes, I’m stoked! Let’s go take out some enemies and what not!”

6. “Zanarkand” from Final Fantasy X

Maybe classical music is more your style. I was blown away by the HD Remix of the game. When Tidus (the main character) comes back to his homeland, Zanarkand, I could feel the sorrow he felt in this song. The technicality of the song is intriguing and one I would love to learn on the piano. It’s simply beautiful.

5. “Gerudo Valley” from Zelda Ocarina of Time by Super Guitar Bros.

(song starts at 8:15)

It’s time for some Latin tunes! The Gamer's a fan of the Super Guitar Bros. Their guitar skills are top notch. They create a whole new feel to the songs that they play. Their rendition of Gerudo Valley makes me want to put on some cha cha heels and shake my hips (and possibly injure myself while doing so).

4. “Halo Theme” from Halo by Lindsey Stirling and William Joseph

Perhaps you like the epic film score? Well, YouTube famous violinist Lindsey Stirling and pianist William Jospeh make the Halo Theme sound like it could be on the big screen. I’m not one for first person shooter games, but this rendition makes the theme sound even more astounding than what others hear on the game itself.

3.” Snake Eater” from Metal Gear Solid 3

The game’s solid, Metal Gear Solid. Hold on to your hats because it’s time for a spy song! Any James Bond fan can appreciate this song as it pays tribute to trumpet fanfares and string sections with a little bit of jazz found in many spy movies. It makes me feel like I should be in a fancy home library wearing a white tux and pouring myself some Scotch or something, even though I don’t drink.

2. “Still Alive” from Portal by GLaDOS and Jonathan Coulton

Hilarity and morbidity are two main elements of this next song. I can see Daft Punk doing a rendition of this song. Am I right? Some of you might have heard this while you were playing Rockband 2. Yeah, it’s a song from a video game. Its dark humor fits the tone of the whole game, and it’s a toe tapper. The Gamer and I constantly sing this on our car trips. It’s that contagious.

1. "Simple and Clean" from Kingdom Hearts

This song reminds me of my ten-year-old self with braces and poufy bangs, wearing my Droopy the Dog nightshirt and daydreaming about impossible romances. This song feels like a 90s pop song that could be played on Ryan Seacrest’s Top 40. I was totally taken on a nostalgic trip when I heard this song while playing Kingdom Hearts. It’s cute and fun and whimsical.

But wait…

BONUS SONG!

"Another Winter" from Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game

This one definitely sounds like video game music. I just can’t help but get all energized from this song. It makes me want to go running. Now that’s saying something!

There it is!

The power of music is a strong one my friends; it comes even from the mediums we least expect them to come from.
