My Childhood in Games

I was feeling very nostalgic this week, and I really miss being a kid. The only things you had to worry about were where they crayons were and what Disney movie to watch that night. I also ended up thinking about all of the games I used to play as a kid. So grab your AA batteries and take a little trip down memory lane with me!

Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast for LCD Frame

LCD or liquid crystal display, were some of the first games I remember playing. Specifically we had The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. The controls were the same for each game, and the objects were similar as well. My favorite one was Beauty and the Beast. Here’s a lovely little commercial for it. Oh the memories!

The Lion King for Sega Genesis

Confession. I found a way to play this online, and it’s the main reason why I’ve procrastinated so much this week. It has been a blast to re-live this game. I’ve only made it to the Simba’s Exile level though. Those falling rocks are a pain in the butt! I also remember it being a lot harder when I was younger. I never beat this game back in the day; I think I made it to the hyena level where you have to go through all of those caves and defeat every hyena. So annoying!

Aladdin for Sega Genesis

I’m pretty sure this is the only game I beat as a kid. I played this game for hours on end. I wanted Aladdin to kiss Jasmine! The Gamer recalled that this game was one of the more difficult games Disney made, and I couldn’t agree more. That dang magic carpet/lava level gave my poor kid self a lot of anxiety. I’m sure of it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega Genesis

I never got very far with this game. It was just too frustrating for my brain I guess. I loved watching my older sister play this one because she could get really far without dying. In my eyes, she was a gaming genius. I ended up getting this game on my phone. I tell you what it’s just as hard as I remember it. It doesn’t help that you have to control everything via touch. It’s extremely tricky. You can find the game on Google Play for free for all of those interested.

Sonic Spinball for Sega Genesis

I think I beat the first level twice. I hated this game. I ended up playing it anyway. I think it was the music. I found it very difficult to get anywhere I wanted in the game, much like a regular pinball machine. I guess I just didn’t have the skill to maneuver Sonic anywhere. Plus that metal snake dragon thing that came out of the water creeped me out!

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for the Original Gameboy

This was my first experience with Mario. That green and black screen was a heavenly sight as I would turn it on and get Mario to various levels. The most memorable part of this was the stage displays. I always found them so fun and enjoyable!

Here are some of my other favorite games I’ve played. There was Duck Hunt for the NES (We played this a lot at our neighbor's house since we didn't own an NES). I played a lot of Pocahontas Interactive Story , The Lion King Activity Game and Harry Potter World Cup (my absolute favorite PC game ever) for the PC. Last but not least there was also SSX3 (a racing snowboard game), Spongebob, Shrek 2 , and Harry Potter 3 ( it played a lot like an RPG) for the Gameboy Advance SP

When I named off all of the games I played, The Gamer said, “You kind of had a crappy taste in games.” Yeah, I kind of did. Most of them were Disney/based-off-a-movie games. However, I will forever cherish the games I grew up playing. Nostalgia is powerful and wonderful to visit.

We’ll see you next week!
