Believe or not, the Super Mario Bros. franchise is turning 30 years old this year. Mario is probably the most iconic video game character out there with over 100 games featuring the famous plumber. Nintendo released some exciting news last week during the Nintendo Direct, and it looks like there will be giving us more surprises throughout the year.

During the Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Mario Maker will be released this September for the Wii U. Now players can make their own Mario levels! The graphic styles are chosen by the player. The games you can choose from are Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U.

They can be as simple or as elaborate you want them to be! Check out the video Nintendo released last week about the game.

On the official Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary website, a surprise is hidden in its source code. After a little searching, viewers see a source code Mario with the caption “Thank You.” It’s a simple surprise, but fans love the gratitude Nintendo is rolling out for the beloved franchise.

It will be exciting to see what else the company will do for this momentous occasion. As for us, we used the rest of The Gamer’s coins from Club Nintendo and purchased Super Mario World for the Wii U. We’ve been playing a little bit, and it’s been fun to go back to the classics.

I think it would be really fun to throw a 30th Anniversary party with friends. Here are some ideas that I’ve come up with.

  • Play Super Smash Bros. with Mario characters only or play Mario Kart.

  • Have a few systems set up for people to play different Mario games.

  • Fun Food! Like this, this and this.

  • Go to a Go Kart park and dress up as Mario characters.

  • Show some fun fan videos. Here are a few of my favorites.

The possibilities are endless! Are you looking forward to Mario Maker? What else do you think Nintendo will do for this celebration?

See you next week!
