Our Favorite Couch Co-Op Games

What’s better than playing video games? Oh, that’s right, playing video games with an awesome person! The Gamer and I like to improve our teamwork by playing co-op video games. We don’t play together all that often, but when we do, it’s a great date night.

Just to be clear, cooperative (co-op) games are those where you can use two players or more to beat the game. Multiplayers like Mario Kart are more competitive than co-op. Here are a few of our favorite.

  • Super Mario Bros Wii (Nintendo Wii)

We played this a lot with friends and with each other before and while we were dating. On my semester off one year, I played this a lot. Upon returning to school, I impressed some of my friends. It’s a fun game to play, even if it means you constantly have to be in the bubble from the other player moving too fast.

  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

We’ve only played this one once or twice together, but they were enjoyable evenings as we were able to do combo moves that involve both players. Plus, The Gamer loves the movie and when I start showing interest in things that he likes, I get extra cuddles. Who knew?!

  • Hyrule Warriors (Nintendo Wii U)

We’ve playing Dynasty Warriors together so I knew adding a few of our favorite Nintendo characters to the mix was going to be epic. The gameplay is simple as you can work together to conquer multiple missions at once or go your separate ways and see which one can get the highest KO count. I love bashing enemies beside The Gamer and conquering final boss battles together. Sigh, I know. I’m such a hopeless romantic.

  • Fat Princess (PlayStation 3)

I scoffed at the story of this game when The Gamer introduced it to me, but it’s actually one of the most strategic games we have played. It’s basically a virtual capture the flag game except the flags are fat princesses. I usually let The Gamer take lead on this one. He knows what he’s doing. Me? I just like to change into different characters and knock out the enemy. I get so distracted playing this one. I thoroughly enjoy charging into battle with my husband though!

  • Rayman Origins (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

This game has similar traits to Super Mario Bros. Wii, but I find this one to be just as fun. Like Mario, you have to keep up with each other’s pace so as not to die, but I like the atmosphere of this game. It’s kind of odd with the characters and backgrounds. However, it doesn’t distract from the fun gameplay you can enjoy with someone.

  • Nintendo Land (Nintendo Wii U)

This one has both co-op and competitive levels. We found ourselves playing this game a lot as some levels let you be different characters. For example, the Metroid levels let you walk around and the person with the Gamepad is in the Samus' gun ship to help assist the ground players.nIt’s friendly. It’s fun. We especially like working together but having separate responsibilities on the Legend of Zelda levels as the one with the Gamepad is the archer and the one with the wii remote is the swordsman.

  • Turtles in Time:Re Shelled (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

This Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game can be played in one sitting. It makes for a great date night as you each become heroes in a half shell. It's pretty basic as you each battle the bad guys and bosses together. It’s one that can be played multiple times and one that would be good to get to know each other’s playing skills and abilities.

Here are some honorable mentions.

  • Rockband (Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

  • Splunky (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

  • Dudgeon Defenders (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

  • Little Big Planet (PlayStation 3)

Next time you want to get to know a person or enjoy an evening with that special someone, pop in a couch co-op game and let the teamwork begin!
